Artist Biography – European Cityscape & Architectural Painter

After leaving the military in the early 1970s, I began working in architecture and design while living in Hollywood, Florida, just six blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. Drawn to structure, form, and the romance of travel, I found myself at a crossroads when a dream of owning a sailboat fell apart. That unexpected turn led to a defining decision—one that would shape my career as a travel-inspired cityscape artist.

At the encouragement of my partner, Deborah—who grew up outside Paris, France—we traveled to Europe. With time between architectural projects, we journeyed from Miami to Nassau, Luxembourg, and ultimately France. The city of Reims was a revelation. Its historic architecture, Gothic cathedrals, and urban rhythm immediately inspired me to sketch. I began documenting city streets, buildings, and cafés, capturing the soul of European life through drawing and observation.

Paris followed, where I immersed myself in European art history, café culture, and architectural landmarks. I studied painting independently—working first in watercolor, then acrylics—developing a distinctive visual language that blends instinct with structure. This approach has often been described as “Sophisticated Primitive,” combining expressive simplicity with architectural precision.

Travel became central to my identity as an artist. I painted and worked in Paris, Florence, Rome, Saint Petersburg, Riga, Cairo, and throughout the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Through collaborations with Baltic Airlines and Finnair, I gained access to international audiences and diverse cultural environments. These experiences deeply influenced my urban landscape paintings, architectural cityscapes, and travel art collections.

My career evolved beyond traditional gallery representation. While exhibiting in prominent galleries on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and in Windsor, England, I discovered that working directly with corporate and international clients allowed for broader creative expression. A pivotal partnership with Lenny Winegrad led to commissions for international airlines, producing limited-edition fine art posters and paintings for destinations across Europe and Israel. I created exclusive works for first-class airline passengers, including iconic London double-decker bus cityscapes for Japanese and Scandinavian airlines.

In 1987, I returned to my hometown of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, in the Pocono Mountains, just one hour from New York City. From this location, I continue to create original paintings, architectural cityscapes, and travel-inspired fine art, drawing on decades of international experience.

Now at 76, I remain actively painting and exhibiting. I am inspired by a close community of artists, including Andrei Protsouk and his son Dennis, whose creative energy keeps my work evolving. Today, my studio practice focuses on beloved destinations such as Key West, Paris, Florence, and historic European cities, celebrating architecture, movement, and the timeless beauty of place.

My work reflects a lifelong journey through art, travel, architecture, and cultural storytelling—a visual record of cities seen not as postcards, but as lived experiences.
